Why is it so important to get a sponsor? Why can’t we get one?
This article will help you understand why it’s necessary to get a wealthy sponsor and how to do it.
I’ve been reading quite a few articles over the internet about this issue and I must say I learned a lot. I thought this subject should be explained to the Israeli players who don’t really know what a sponsor is, and were afraid to ask.
Let’s get started.
Online games are not just games anymore. To most of us Counter Strike / Quake3 / WC3 or whatever is just a game we play with our friends. But there are a couple of teams which Virtual Gaming is their whole life. It’s what they do for a living; it’s what they think about first thing when they wake up at the morning and last thing when they go to sleep (well, not exactly everyone. There are students for instance, who play computer games side to side with their academic life).
Big firms such as Intel, AMD etc. sponsor the biggest and most successful teams.
The financial support allows the team members to play worldwide with the best hardware and the best support they can get.
How will your professional gaming career develop without a sponsor to back you up?
First of all, you need a strong computer. The constant progress of technology will force you to replace your hardware in a (relatively) short period of time. After all, the stronger your computer is, the better you play.
You’ll have to travel abroad with your computer, pay for a place to stay, pay for tickets and take care of arrangements on your own… A LOT OF MONEY!
And this is not all. Sponsor is a must to every clan that wants to place itself on the map.
So why can’t we just get a sponsor? Well, it’s not that easy.
Many people don’t know how to approach a company. They don’t know who to address and how to phrase a reply or a request. The most desirable companies get the biggest amount of requests. An improperly written request will be immediately turned down.
I believe that a lot of the addressees have a script deleting any email containing the word “sponsor” or “clan”, due to the huge amount of requests.
Here are a few steps that may help your team to be supported:
Check who’s the correct person to send your request to. If you won’t send the request to the right place, you will be ignored.
You must understand that the company is not looking for a way to HELP you. Every company is looking for a way to advertise their products. Sponsoring you is just a way to market their products.
When you’re addressing the sponsor, be sure to note him where are you planning to advertise him or his products. You may do it via mIRC, website or any other way you can. After all, this is what the sponsor wants.
The only way a sponsor will take you for serious is if you will approach him as a pro, and show him you know what you’re talking about. You need to make a partnership proposal, which will radiate who you are and who you represent.
You should make a contract document, to be signed by both parties (you and the company). After all, you want your sponsor to help you and the contract will make him keep his promise to you.
As far as it goes for sponsorship, Israel, as usual, is slow to catch on. I wrote about it before, but I’ll say it again; Israel has NO exposure in everything involves virtual gaming. If you will come up to a big firm in Israel, they’ll probably laugh at your face. You should really know how to approach the company you want to attract. It’s the most important thing in my personal opinion.
If you will be able to represent yourself and your clan at the right way, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
As you know, a sponsored team is not something extraordinary, and with a lot of hard work and determination, you can get your own sponsor which will support you all the way.
Remember, once you got a sponsor, hold on to him otherwise it’ll be gone and all of your hard work will go down the drain.
I hope this article helped you to understand what a sponsor is and what it takes to get one. I hope you’ll succeed finding your own very sponsor, and remember, don’t promise anything you cannot keep.
